Avalanche Studios Group is looking for an experienced Game (Combat) Designer to join our team to work on an unannounced AAA title. Avalanche Studios is the division dedicated to ambitious, externally published, AAA open-world games like the Just Cause series, Mad Max and Rage 2.

The Position
As a Game Designer at Avalanche Studios, you will be responsible for designing and balancing content, combat-related systems and prototyping tactile player character/enemy mechanics using our in-house tools. You will play a crucial role, as part of a design team and in collaboration with other disciplines, in shaping the PVE combat experience of our unannounced title.

In this position, you will collaborate closely with the Narrative Designers, Gameplay and System Designers, Animators, Coders, Sound Designers, Artists, and other key stakeholders to effectively realize the team leadership’s vision for the game’s combat experience. As part of the responsibilities for this role. you will own specific Combat Design areas, as well as organize and help execute the implementation of Combat features and systems.

What you'll do

    • Design satisfying character combat mechanics and engaging combat experiences
    • Utilize our in-house tools to prototype player character mechanics or AI mechanics 
    • Balance content and tune combat-related systems
    • Able to successfully produce results individually and as part of a combat design team
    • Produce clear documentation and simple storyboards to illustrate combat mechanics

Who you are

    • Solid working experience as a designer or in other comparable positions within the games industry
    • Experience from at least one released title containing combat elements
    • Experience working with game editors such as UnrealEd/Hammer
    • Basic understanding of programming and, ideally, scripting experience/knowledge (Python, LUA or equal)
    • Ability to analyze and understand how existing games are constructed
    • Strong knowledge of game design fundamentals and player fantasies
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
    • Curious gamer with a wide portfolio of games played
    • Understand the importance of keeping deadlines, and working towards both high-level vision and specific goals
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (English)

The Stockholm location

Our Stockholm office is situated in Södermalm, the beating heart of the city’s game industry.
